Dear Career Champion,

📖 Story Time: As I reflect on my journey from administrative support staff to academic support staff and now to entrepreneurship, I realize the power of advocating for oneself during performance appraisals. While I was fortunate to work with supportive leaders who encouraged initiative, and as such I always looked forward to feedback but I missed the practice of self-advocacy. I waited for others to tell me what I was doing well and what I wasn't. Placing practically all of my growth in someone else's hands. Scary right!!!!!

Now, as an entrepreneur evaluating my own progress, I wished I learnt to ask for advice as well as feedback. I now understand the importance of being able to see myself with compassion as well as owning my strengths. Self-audits, and clarity in leveraging strengths is a powerful tool to unleash potential. Your review is not just a meeting; it's a showcase of your journey. Make use of leaders and own your contribution and progress with pride!

💡5 Tips for Owning YOUR review: Confidence starts with awareness, acknowledging your wins, your skills, growth and how you contribute to the bottom line are all points of awareness.

When in the performance conversation:

  • 1. Be compassionate with yourself and the rater, accept the report, this doesn't mean it's accurate it's just data on how they experienced you and a sample of your work not all of it. We are always missing something, assume good intent. If you get a great rating accept it as well!!
  • 2.Be curious, ask, what can I do to get to a 10 or exceed expectations (if they are articulated).
  • 3. Explore and discuss your intentions or commitments for the next year but keep it to 1-3  and that it's aligned to their objectives as well. That way they know you're on the same team and you want to help them win too. 1-3  areas are easier to keep track of and remember and can stop you from feeling overwhelmed by them.
  • 4. When you get a great rating share what helped you to get it done, even if you just note it for yourself.
  • 5. Always keep a copy of the document or take note of the winners for your brag book , this is particularly useful if you are challenged to advocate for yourself. It's also a marker of the impact your making.

Action: Before the review or as part of  your own self audit, jot down your victories, big or small. Reflect on the challenges you conquered, the skills and strengths you used to get through them, and the growth you embraced. This preparation will turn your review into a celebration of your progress—even if it's just you, because we won't always meet others' expectations, especially when they're not clearly stated. If you're having trouble getting started try this question to help you get going:

What would your past self ( 1 year ago or more) be proud you accomplished?
